The Crane-Phillips House Museum, located in Cranford, New Jersey, attracts thousands of visitors each year to this historic location. The Little House on the Rahway was originally built in the year 1840 by Josiah Crane, who is the Cranford founder. It was intended to be a two-room honeymoon cottage for his son Josiah Crane Jr. It was later sold by Josiah Crane Jr. in 1867 to Henry and Cecilia Phillips who later lived there until Henry passed away in 1911.
The cottage that you see today was originally renovated to its current state by the Phillips. Many people consider that the cottage is an excellent example of the architectural style of Andrew Jackson Downing, who was the United States’ first architect.
